about
This song came about at a songwriting workshop I attended. My assignment was to write a song incorporating the title of a Raymond Carver short story. The title I got was, “The Third Thing That Killed My Father Off.” I also used aspects and experiences from my own life to help color the story.
lyrics
Careful, that’s what my father said, before I jumped so high and I broke my bed • He said slowly when you chew the fat • my fever’s coming back before the last one’s gone • It’s not the third thing that killed my father off • I never knew, I never saw it coming • No, it’s not the last thing I remember • the reckless rain, a hollow pain, the Pontiac that drove forever • And I can’t imagine the perfect companion to all of this meaning • a careful confusion at it’s best • Forget the rest-less-ness • Forget the restlessness • Sacrifice, that’s what it’s all about, turning the mice to men, doing it all again • Watch out the rebel will call your name and somehow relieve the shame of ignoring what matters most • And it’s not the third thing that killed my father off • I never knew, I never saw it coming • It’s not the last thing I remember • Geronimo, a wicked blow, a sound that echoed on forever • And I can’t imagine a perfect companion to all of this meaning • a careful confusion at it’s best • Forget the rest-less-ness • Forget the restlessness
