about
My friend Michael Jewel Haley shot a photo of his reflection in the window of Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, where a promo poster was hanging that simply said, “You Belong Here.” I was struck by the simple, yet profound, statement. It stayed with me as I watched the John Carney film, “Once” starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Their movie story inspired me to write this song.
lyrics
You told yourself so many times that your words aren’t worth a dime, but I’m here to say, that there’s just no way • Kept your voice silent from afar, you never felt you’d break the jar, but it’s your day, and I’m here to say • it’s no accident, you found me on a crowded street • It’s no accident, our crooked stories had to meet • It’s no accident • You belong here • Made your way got through the day, played your part, held back your heart, just enough to keep the waters rough • Did the things expected of you, made your eyes bright, smiles tight, just behind the promises you broke to yourself • It’s no accident that I was here to dry your tears • It’s no accident that I could see right past the fears • It’s no accident • You belong here • Hey can’t you see, it’s always been me • Try to believe the truth that we seek • One day soon you’ll realize birds of a feather flock together • It’s what they say, and baby it’s okay • ‘Cause it’s no accident • You belong here
